Things That Make You Go Hmmm....

From an AP report a couple of hours ago about people picketing Wal-Mart because of the Happy Holidays "scandal":

Dick Otterstad of the Church of the Divide donned a Santa Claus costume and greeted shoppers with the message: Don't forget about the meaning of Christmas.

What? Does that make sense to you? It doesn't to me.

Yeah, I heard they aren't allowed to say Merry Christmas because it has "Christ" in it. Wal-mart and others also. As a lover of Christ and Christian I think we should stand up for Him and not shop at a store that He isn't welcome. Just a thought. Your thoughts would be nice too.

boycotts are not the way to react to this. the fact is that a company that is openly traded on the stock market is protecting themselves by not marketing to a specific religious affiliation. Besides, what's the difference if we love Chirst or not? The stores have never said that they "were taking Christ out of Christmas." that is the Christian response. Christ would probably be very happy that these store are not marginalizing the other groups. We cannot change the world by advocating animosity, we must try to love others, even those that chose to do what we might not like.

Yeah - for me the thing that didn't make sense was the a man dressed as Santa Claus was trying to spread the message what the "true meaning of Christmas" really is.

I think stores are either going with their theme (coming home for the holidays) or being sensitive to the fact that other holidays are happening the same time as Christmas (Chanukah, for example, begins on Christmas Day this year).

For the record... I understood what you were saying in the post :) haha

Yeah...I guess your right. But it would seem to me that the only reason for not saying "Merry Christmas", is because it has Christ in it. I think that Christmas is not just for Christians either, I know many people who call it Christmas and aren't Christians. I think I'm getting my thoughts all jumbled up. The bottom line for me is, that if they aren't saying Christmas because of the word "Christ" in it, then why pay money to support an ideal like that? It comes down to supporting something that is against your beliefs. At least to me thats what it comes down to...

I agree, Dylan, but sometimes we assume that someone isn't saying "Christmas" because they don't want to celebrate Christ, when really it's because of some other reason.

A good example of this is when I was in jr.high/high school and I watched the Charlie Brown Christmas movie - I got really upset and mad that instead of "Christmas", it said "Xmas" everywhere. I thought that it meant that they wanted to "x" out Christ. Then I went to college and found out that the first letter of "Christ(os)" is Chi, which is an X. Therefore, Schultz wasn't trying to dismiss Christmas - he actually added another dimension with his movie. And then when I saw it again after knowing that, I also noticed that Linus recites Luke 2 and says that that is the true meaning of Christmas.

I hope you see my point...

Oh yeah I see your point...and I do have a little different perspective on things...different people have different convictions, and they should by all means follow them. (if they are true and of God). But what mike said really rang true for me, there are alot more important things to worry about this Christmas than bickoring about things like this. That is what I agree with. But if they are taking Christmas out of the stores because it has "Christ" in it, then I do not support that, nor should any Christ follower. That is obvious. But there are alot more important things to worry about. He is the reason for the season! Great talk everyone.
