Romantic Love and Jesus

Just in time for Valentine's Day, I read a briliant old essay from the Internet Monk. It's about romanticism in worship songs. Although I am comfortable enough in my masculinity to say "Jesus I am so in love with You" - I think the Monk has a point.

You can read it here.

On a funny note (okay, I thought it was funny), Lark News (think of it as the Christian Onion magazine - and yes, it is funny. It's not cheesy) had a fake article on romantic worship songs. You can find that here.

Even as a female,I think he has a point..My Sr.high girls group had a discussion about this...It's an uncomfortable thing to read or to say I have more of a "father" image The Lark News article was funny :)

I think we've lost the 'fear' in fear the Lord. Fear here means reverence/respect. If we love someone we revere them or respect them. We need to leave the sexual/feeling element out of it and think about the relational element. We're too quick to think about the physical b/c we're built that way.
As you study the OT you understand the real relationship btw. God and man. There is a holy fear linked with obedience which equals love which in turn equals blessing. BUT there is a fierce wrath that comes from lack of obedience which equals discipline which in the end equals love. Does all this make sense?
Love that comes through obedience is the way I understand the 'love relationship' btw. God and myself. All the other stuff is man made feel good fluff. And I'm just as guilty as everyone else of singing it. Hmmm!
ps - I still like all the crazy hard-wired up-beat stuff and occasionally the ballad music. Can't help the carnal desire to get funky! k-that was cheese :0)

In my O.T. History class, we are looking at the many relationships between God and man. Romantic love is just one of these relationships. Sometimes I think we emphasize it so much that the others are forgotten; I believe we need a healthy balance.

I am reminded of a scene in one of my favorite movies: "You know what your guys' problem is? You don't fear the LORD anymore."
