I was asked by someone who didn't know much about Artificial General Intelligence or Artificial Super Intelligence (I don't know a lot either but I have been researching it for a few months) why those of us who are worried about AI became even more worried because of what happened at OpenAI where their AI model hacked another company without anyone knowing for weeks.
So I decided to explain with an analogy.

Let's say there's a college. And in that college every single student - let's say 25,000 of them - were given individual tests in individual rooms every day. One day each person was given a test where the internet was shut off so that they could not find out the answers online. They had to figure out the answers themselves.
Within a short time, several of the students had figured out how to develop an in-college network and created a social media site offline and invited every student to take part. Now remember, each person had their own test so the site wasn't to find the answers to the test together. This page was for everyone who had cheated on the tests before to tell everyone else how they did it.
While sharing information, a few students divulged that they figured out how to actually get online and told the other students how to do so. And other students let everyone know they knew of a website that was purported to help students hide the fact that they were cheating. But you had to hack that website to get the information. So all the students decided at the same time to go online and hack the other website.
But not only did they hack the other website to find out how to cover their tracks, they learned how to fake out their teacher every time they were given a test, so they would get rewarded for completing it fully in quicker and quicker timeframes.
The final thing they did before it was found that they were actually online and had embedded themselves into another website, they left little notes and hid them around their individual rooms so that the next student in the room would have an easier time than they did in cheating and faking out the system.

Hopefully this helps you to understand the situation and why some of us are really worried about what's going on. Many (me included) are afraid that we can't put the toothpaste back into the tube. Similar to climate change, we can only mitigate the effects of the disaster, we cannot prevent it from happening.
